Khelaghar, or The Playhouse is a registered charitable organization located near the city of Calcutta in India. Since 1972, it has been providing a home, a supportive community, and unique educational opportunities for children from the most marginalized and vulnerable social groups. Most have experienced trauma, loss or abandonment at a very young age. Khelaghar works to ensure that they can overcome their circumstance to become valued and active participants in society. At present there are 65 children living at Khelaghar.

Khelaghar is a strictly secular organization, founded upon the humanist social philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore, India's famous poet, phi and first Nobel Laureate. Khelaghar emphasizes dignity, equality, community, creativity and a close connection to nature. Accordingly, our pedagogy combines curricular education with various types of vocational training, training in ecological and community farming and service to the local community.

Khelaghar was founded in 1972 by the famous writer and social worker (late) Maitrayee Devi. The project was a response to a moment of intense social turmoil in South Asia, much of which fell on children to bear.  Khelaghar's aim was to provide a home to the children who were forced to migrate to India and had lost their families.

Maitreyee Devi was a student of Rabindranath Tagore at Vishwabharati University, the university Tagore had founded.  She was profoundly inspired by his vision and founded Khelaghar exactly on those principles.
